On April 6, 1941 he married Vera Geyer at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Shortly
after their marriage, Vernon was drafted into the Army Air Corp, serving four years. Following
his discharge they farmed in the Potsdam area, N.W of Elgin. In 1976 they retired and moved to
Woodland Estates, Elgin.
In retirement Vernon enjoyed woodworking, dancing and traveling.
He was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin and was a member of the Elgin
American Legion.
He is survived by three sons; Gene (Shirley) Reiter, Glenn (Diane) Reiter, both of Elgin, and
Doug (Rose) Reiter of St. Charles, two daughters; Judy (Dale) Donlinger of Rochester and
Linda (Fred) Meurer of Lake City. 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 5
great-great-grandchildren and 1 sister; Verdetta Maass of Rochester also survive.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vera, 1 son Vern, and 1 grandson
Robert Harwood.
The funeral service is Wednesday, April 10, 11 am at Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin with Rev.
Terrill Bramstedt officiating. Burial is at the Elgin Cemetery with military grave side rites
conducted by the Elgin American Legion. The visitation is Tuesday, 5-8 pm at the Schad &
Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
