It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, Rita Teresa Jacobs. Mom entered into eternal life on December 3, 2023 at Green Prairie Place in Plainview, Minnesota at the age of 93.
She was born on January 25th, 1930 to Frank and Mary Deming on their farm that was 2.5 miles west of Plainview. Mom was the youngest of seven children, having 3 brothers and 3 sisters.
She would often tell stories about going to Mass on Sundays in the winter by horse and sleigh, covered with heavy blankets to keep warm, with only her eyes peeking out! Mom also told us about having to walk to town for piano lessons and being terrified of walking past the neighbors bull that they kept chained up in the ditch. And her good dress that she wore was RED !!!
Mom attended country school just down the road from their farm. Her sister, Eleanor was her teacher for 2 years. Mom and her parents moved into Plainview when she was 12 and about to start 7th grade. She graduated from Plainview High School in 1948 and attended 2 years at the College of Saint Teresa in Winona. She worked as a bookkeeper until her children were born.
Mom married our Dad, Earl Edwin Jacobs, on Oct. 20, 1951 in Plainview. Together they raised 5 daughters and 5 sons in the house that Earl built. They owned a Family Shoe Repair business out of their garage/shop. In 1970 she and Dad established Plainview Disposal Service and later a Recycling Center. They worked together in this business for 25 years.
She was baptized, received first communion, confirmed and married all at St. Joachim Catholic Church. Mom was a Eucharistic Minister, lector, and a parish Advisory and Education Board member. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and served in many capacities within. She was a member of the church choir and sang in it for many years until she no longer could. She believed in serving others. She led the rosary at wakes, trained mass servers, taught Latin responses in the late 1940’s and taught 2nd grade religion classes for 10 years. Mom received the Bishop’s Medal in August of 2001.
While Mom’s deep devotion for her Catholic faith was a large part of her life, she had many other passions as well. Mom’s love for board games (especially scrabble and Rummikub), cards, camping and having fun at the casino was no secret! She loved to play BINGO with her friends and she passed that onto her grandchildren, but it had to be taken seriously! Mom was always drawn to the outdoors. She had a love for fishing, both shore (NOT in a boat!) and ice fishing. She always found joy in tending to her flower beds and gardens! Mom definitely had a green thumb!
As many can attest to, she had the most infectious smile that could heal any broken heart. Mom accepted God’s will no matter the circumstances and was known for ability to turn to her faith during her hardest times. Mom was known for many things in her life. She was a wife, mother, daughter, sister, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and a friend to many.
She is survived by her sons, Mark (Denise), Plainview, MN, Dan (DeeRenee) of Port Angeles, WA, John (Jane) of Rochester, MN and Michael (Dan) of Vancouver, WA and her daughters, Jennifer Barney, Michigan, ND, Mary (Bill) Wagner of Rochester, MN, Susan (Mike) Thompson of Casper, WY, Julie (Chuck) Kruger, St. Cloud, MN and Karen Jacobs of Mason City, IA. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren and 5 step great-grandchildren. Mom is also survived by her sister-in-law, Ione Spring Jacobs. She also leaves behind many very special neices and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Earl (May 13, 2019) son, Thomas (Dec. 1, 2017), and son-in-law Michael Barney (February 17, 2013). Her 6 siblings also preceded her in death.
A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, December 9th, 11:00 am at St. Joachim Catholic Church in Plainview. Visitation will be held on Friday, December 8 from 5-7 pm at Schad and Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and one hour prior to the mass at church. Following the service, Mom will be laid to rest next to our dad and brother in St. Joachim Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to the American Diabetes Association.
Our family would like to send a very special thank you to the staff at Green Prairie Rehabilition Center for their excellent care for mom for the past 2.5 years. Also, to the many wonderful people at Mayo Hospice for keeping mom comforable during her last month. A heartfelt thank you to Jody Fletcher for the support and kindness shown to our mom for the past 2.5 years.
