Matt Taubel

Matt Taubel Obituary

He received the Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, the Philippine
Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star, and the Unit Citation for Occupation of Japan.
He married Catherine Angelbeck on May 23, 1946, at Immaculate Conception Church,
rural Kellogg, Minnesota.  They purchased the former Joe Schad farm in the Theilman
area and farmed there all their lives.  He served as trustee for the St. Peter and Paul
Cemetery for 40 years.  He taught religious education for 26 years.  He served as
Highland Township assessor.  He was treasurer for Conception area rural schools for
10 years.  He was local and state president of The Friends of Minnesota Schools
Association.  He served 42 years on the Greenwood Prairie Burial Association board.  
He was Wabasha County manager and dealer for Archer Oil for 40 years and was
recognized many times for his sales achievements.  After retiring from farming, he was
assistant manager at JT Variety store in Plainview. In his later years, he enjoyed his
grandchildren and great grandchildren, watching the many of species of birds that
flocked to his feeders, playing cards and “chicken-foot” dominos, and word find
puzzles.
He was an honorary member of the Knights of Columbus and held the Grand Knight
and trustee offices.  He also was a long-standing member of the Wabasha VFW Post
4086 and the Plainview American Legion Post 179.
He is survived by three sons, Joseph (Patty Jo), Theilman; Jerome (Jan), Rochester;
James (Bonnie Friscino), Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin; and six daughters, Kathleen
Sagissor (Leo), Plainview; Carolyn Purcell (Dave), Rochester; Marie Meyer (Albert),
Theilman; Martha Melvin (Larry), Rochester; Monica Koelsch (Jerald), Pine Island;
Rita Young (Maurice), Plainview; thirty-four grandchildren, three step grandchildren;
forty great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.  He was preceded in
death by his wife, Catherine, his son, Lawrence, his parents, his sister, Juliana Bauer,
his brother, Stephen Taubel, and his granddaughter, Pamela Koelsch.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Wednesday, July 3, 11 am at Immaculate Conception
Catholic Church, rural Kellogg, Minnesota, with Father William Becker officiating.
Burial will be in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Conception. Family and friends may call
Tuesday, 4 to 8 pm, at the Schad & Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview and one hour
prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. A rosary will be recited at 3:45 pm
Tuesday at the funeral home.
