Mary Elizabeth (Sloan) Wehrs went to be with her Lord in Heaven on Friday, February 23, 2024, after a 2-year battle with cancer.
Mary was born on Sept. 6, 1935 at the Caledonia Community Hospital to John and Ruth (Pilgrim) Sloan. She was the youngest of their 5 children with 4 older brothers: John (Dorine) Sloan, Ernie (Donna) Sloan, Glen (Valrie) Sloan, and Lynn (Eileen) Sloan.
While she was a child, Mary’s family moved about every 2 years, and she attended country school in Houston County, MN. Mary attended and graduated from Winona High School in June 1953. She then moved to Plainview, MN, where she worked at Nedrelow’s Jewelry Store, waited tables at the Dairy Café, did daycare, and worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Plainview Milk Products.
In January, 1956, Mary met the love of her life, Lyle Wehrs, at his tavern in Plainview. They married July 10, 1956 at the Methodist Church in Plainview, MN. Mary converted to Missouri Synod Lutheran church. She loved her Lord and Savior, and was an active member of Immanuel Luther Church, where she taught Sunday School, participated in church women’s circles, and did Altar duty.
Mary and Lyle loved to travel, and spend many winters in Harlingen, Texas. She also loved spending time with family, and knowing “what’s going on?” with everyone.
Mary was a loving Mom, Grandma, and great-Grandmother. She was also a sewing enthusiast, knitted, made “button” quilts, did crafts, and canned many jars of tomatoes, peaches, and green and yellow beans. Mary and Lyle were also boy scout leaders.
Mary is survived by her husband Lyle, and their children David (Bobbi) of Estes Park, CO; Richard (Liz) of Peoria, IL; Ruth (Jim Nock) of Rochester, MN; Heather of Wausau, WI; Janet (Glenn) Timm of Millville, MN; and Jeri of Plainview, MN.; 13 grandchildren: Teresa (Steve), Kate (Brandon), Eric, Tim (Leah), James (Amy), April (Woodie), Seth (Samantha), Nina, Brad, Jeff, Justine, Jasmine, and Carson; and 8 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, all 4 brothers, 2 sisters-in-law, and son Jeff “Odie” Wehrs.
Special thank you to Dr. Bois, Dr. Carr and Amy Allen, Dr. McKenzie, Lisa McKabe, Teresa, RN and staff at Green Prairie and Maureen and Martha and the staff of Mayo Hospice, for their excellent care.
