Elgin Norman Obituary

Elgin Leroy Norman, 82 of Kellogg, MN  passed away on March 18th, 2023 following a courageous battle with a stroke and a malignant Glioblastoma brain tumor.  Elgin was born on Sept. 24th, 1940 in Wauneta, Nebraska to parents Frank and Annie Meta (Christensen) Norman.  His family moved from Nebraska and settled in Minnesota, where he graduated from Rochester High School and joined the voluntary draft for the Army and served for two years. Elgin married Jean Carpenter in November 1963. They had two sons, Mark and Kevin.

In 1963 he went to work for the Rochester Fire Department and retired as a Captain in 1998.  He had many memories of being on the Fire Department that included the Miracle Mile Shopping Center fire and the Rochester flood of 1978.  He had a passion to restore old items.   He was involved in bringing the original central fire station 4-sided clock out of storage and putting it back in service.  It was originally placed at the 1st National Bank and then at the Mayo Civic Auditorium.  He helped do a total restoration on the Ahrens-Fox vintage fire truck for the Bi-centennial year.  It is currently on display at Station 2 located on Viola Road NE, Rochester.

Following retirement from the Fire Department, Elgin worked for Americana Homes digging basements and landscaping yards for new home construction.  You could always find Elgin helping family and friends do landscaping, helping build garages, restoring furniture, and many projects in between.  He was an avid collector of old tools and enjoyed reading all of Billy Graham’s books.

Elgin formerly served as a deacon at First Baptist Church.  He was a Laymen for Christ/Woodland Camp board member for many years.

Elgin was the youngest of eight siblings.  Survivors are his wife Jean, two sons, Mark (Sara, fiancé'), Lake City and Kevin (April), Mount Pleasant, NC. Five grandchildren, Forrest, Levi, Larissa, Blake & Zach and five great-grandchildren, Easton, Liam, Mayla, Elizabeth and George. Two brothers, Jim (Cleone), Rochester and Merl (Anna Mae), Zumbro Falls, along with many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Country Cottage Senior Living / Family Roots Eldercare in Plainview and Seasons Hospice for providing support and loving care to Elgin before he left this life to go to his heavenly home with Jesus. They would also like to thank the Rochester Fire Department and the American Legion for all their support.
